My mom's name was Carrie and she was an insanely creative, independent, fierce woman. You told her no; she said yes. Her charm; she just liked doing things her way. That mentality carried over into her art. She was a madly talented potter. She picked up the wheel in her mid-50s while taking an art class at the local community college. Instantly, she was hooked. While she attended art class as a student, many of her fellow students would ask her for advice or help on their next throw.
This desire to teach and create extended to me as well. Every time I came home from college, she and I would create something. I am incredibly thankful she ensured I held a space for creativity. And, we did it together.
She passed away in January 2018 due to metastatic breast cancer.
It's With Care, my Dad's nickname for her, that I create in her honor. She lives in me always.
She would not be surprised I focus mainly on flowers, nature, and anything outside. Under the right conditions – soil, water, light – the most beautiful thing happens, a rose blooms, a tree grows, butterflies and birds find refuge. I cannot think of anything I’d rather do than sit and observe nature, then translate what I see into my art creations with a myriad of mediums – acrylic, gelatos, markers, and a pen.
Thank you for sharing this art space with me.
